Tips For Starting A Container Garden

01/06/2015 10:57

Container gardening is a boon for people who would like to grow their produce, but do not have enough space to grow them. For gardens limited to the balcony, small yard, porch or driveway, containers are great means to grow vegetables apart from ornamental plants. Herbs like basil, thyme and chives are literally made for container gardening.

Aesthetically speaking, container plants provide versatility to your garden. You can experiment with colors and arrangement to make it the focal point of your garden or blend it along with architecture. Two containers of the same color can be placed at either side of any entrance to give a welcoming look. You can even cluster the containers to grow a variety of ornamental plants or herbs to add a rich look to your garden. Hanging boxes and window baskets enhances beauty to the architecture of your home.

 Some Tips For Container Gardening

Choice Of Containers

You can buy ornamental pots from your local depot, or you can choose everyday materials like bowls, barrels or even old car batteries to grow plants.

Choice of Size

When choosing the size of the container always remember that plants grow well in large containers than in small containers. This is mainly because large containers can contain more soil, can retain more moisture, and the root has more space to grow. Small containers can be used for plants that require lesser space. Other factors which influence the size are space available, maximum permissible weight (in case of hanging and window boxes), portability.

Drainage

Drainage is very important for plants, because if they are waterlogged they will rot and die. Hence, it is important for containers to have drainage holes. The location of the drainage hole is important to ensure proper drainage. Since the container can be in any shape providing the hole at the bottom may not be work all the time. Ideally choose a location where the water can drain out by gravity. The hole can be small, but the size of the hole must be enough to drain out excess water.

Material Of Container

The material of the container for container gardening can be chosen based on the local conditions. For example, clay or terracotta pots are beautiful, but they break easily and are susceptible to break in alternating freezing and thawing conditions. Plastic containers are light-weight, sturdy and last long. They are the best choice for hanging boxes.
