Sustainable Agriculture Vs Industrial Farming: A Comparison

01/03/2015 10:54

Sustainable agriculture has been discussed widely in the recent years. There are farmers who are forced to believe modern industrial methods of agriculture are more effective than natural farming. What people don't see is a long term effect the industrial methods have on the environment and humanity. In this blog, we shall try to provide a comprehensive comparative analysis of industrial, agricultural methods and sustainable agriculture

Industrial Agriculture

Industrial methods of agriculture promote the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides on a large scale. They also impart the concept of growing a single crop on the field. Even the farm animals are confined to closed spaces and restricted freedom of movement. Though these methods seemed to produce good results in the beginning, over the course of time they have started going on a downward trajectory.

Crop Production

The Downside

Growing multiple crops not only brings in produce but also help maintain the quality of soil. Now if a farmer follows the practice of growing a single crop on a piece of land, the nutrient rich soil, loses all it richness over a period of time. Chemical fertilizers and pesticides are used to improve the soil fertility and prevent pest attacks respectively. But fertilizers are not magic. Farmers who fail to realize that, use them in excess. They push the land over the limit by growing incessantly by using more and more fertilizers. Ironically they simply lose the fertility of the soil. Chemical pesticides are not very selective and kill even the beneficial insects like earthworms. Also these chemicals, percolate into the soil and reach the water bodies. Excessive use of fertilizers and pesticides, make it hard for us to ensure that the produce that we consume is chemical free.

This practice is not feasible even in economic terms. Farmers invest lots in chemical fertilizers and pesticides to keep the unnatural practice going. Pests become resistant hence more pesticides need to be used. Animals get sicker, and more drugs need to be administered. Soil loses its fertility and hence more fertilizers need to be used. But their farm produce is not proportionate. When they finally take their produce to the market, the buyers offer prices which make their produces literally profitless.

Sustainable Agriculture

Sustainable agriculture, on the other hand, encourages growing multiple crops and crop rotation. Livestock and animals are grown in farms and not confined spaces. The fertilizers are produced from animal waste and compost. Even the pesticides are made using practices followed by our ancestors to keep only the harmful pests in check. The farm runs like machine with one part feeding the other, and there is plenty left for others when sustainable agriculture practiced.

Clearly the winner here is sustainable farming.

Here is a natural method that paves the way for sustainable agriculture

Sustainable agriculture without the use of any fertilizers or pesticides is no more a nightmare with the advent of The Trivedi Effect®. This natural phenomenon has paved a whole new way of sustainable agriculture, and it involves transformation of plants and crops through an Energy Transmission.
