 Poultry farming system involves the raising and domestication of birds like chicken, turkey, ducks, and geese. The primary purpose of such a farming system is to obtain and sell meat or eggs for food. Poultry farming is a widespread practice with the major chickens being reared in various poultry farms. Chickens are a staple in poultry and are a major source of food as both the meat and their eggs are majorly consumed food. Layers are chickens raised for eggs, and those used for meat are called broilers.

To start a poultry, land, capital and equipment are required. Buildings are needed to raise chickens in, these can be sheds or pens based on the raising requirements: which can be conventional or can be free-range. One also requires the place to cultivate crops for the chicken. Machinery along with equipment is required to clean barns, to dispose of dead stock and to work crops. 

 The owner also needs to make decisions on the method to raising chickens. There are two main ways to raise poultry chickens. Conventionally, having chickens restricted to barns which are controlled for temperature and photo-period. Another unconventional system is free-range that allows the chickens to run in the farm and behave as per their natural and free living style. There are two sectors in poultry production, and the owner can choose from these two: one is broilers, with the major product being the chicken's meat and layers with chicken's eggs as the product.

The poultry industry at present supports a major chunk of the massive world population and provides for the everyday food requirements of a number of people around the world. But lately the industry has been challenged with a few difficulties that are destroying it slowly. The poultry production industry has been plagued with problems due to "Avian Influenza" and the solutions to curb the spreading of the disease, and the chances of it mutating to more dangerous forms are hard to find. The disease has increased the mortality rate of chickens, and their health has deteriorated.

The other major concern for the industry is inflation. The farming of chickens on a scale as large as the poultry industry relies on high protein food for chicken that is mostly derived from soya beans. But very low yields of edible proteins are obtained for the higher amount of protein consumed. Thus to enhance the production from poultry, one will require economical solutions. The use of growth hormones is not permissible in the industry.
